Ultra Small Ocean
Boise, ID
Each one of us is a miniature ocean, an ecosystem of tiny creatures in a body composed mostly of water. And we’re always changing. Ultra Small Ocean began as a solo outlet for Boise-based musician Daniel Bagley and morphed into something else. Combining electric and acoustic guitar, violin and cello, upright bass, piano, synth, sparse beats, and lyric poetry, Ultra Small Ocean’s sound is minimal but dense. It has the darkness of the sea’s depths and the brilliance of the wave’s crest. Their first full-length release, Six of Winds, showcases the depth of the songwriting backed by a group of extraordinary players. Each note is momentous, the lyrics heartfelt, the instruments threading together to form a singular sound. Unorthodox guitar pulses like the surf's rhythm entwined with show-stopping violin melodies and sometimes brooding cello. Several songs find Bagley alone in a room with a classical guitar, brutally minimal. When he sings, “The wind is a rake for its own sake” on the stunning closer, “Hulls Brook,” you feel like anything could happen.
