hemlock
Lafayette, LA
hemlock is the swamp-raised, “phone-fi" alt-folk project of multi-disciplinary creative force Carolina Chauffe, currently anchored between Louisiana and Chicago, but more often on the highway.
Doggedly DIY, they have toured nearly nonstop for the past few years on “permatour”, prioritizing non-traditional and alternative venue spaces such as house shows. Both following and expanding true folk tradition, they strive to return music to where it has always existed - the porch, the waterside, the field, the home.
An avid documenter and self-proclaimed amateur archivist, Chauffe touts a prolific discography spanning hundreds of self-released songs since the project formed in 2018, including their ongoing phone-recorded song-a-day for-a-month saga.
Their most recent studio LP, '444', was independently released in October 2024, featuring a wrecking crew of Chicago bandmates, sharing members of Friko & Free Range.
Frontperson Carolina has also toured & recorded in such acts as Little Mazarn (2019-present), Merce Lemon (2023-present), Babehoven (2022), and Fran (2023).
They are a neighbor, a gatherer, and a hopeful for a free Palestine, for a free tomorrow for all.
They will be a road dog for as long as they can, and a music-maker for as long as they live. They believe in miracles, in magic, in song as something revolutionary, and their favorite color lately is green.
***Please note that the majority of hemlock's music is no longer available on Spotify, in protest of founder Daniel Ek's multi-million dollar investments in AI military killer drone technology (among other things), but their releases are still currently listenable everywhere else you may typically seek music on the worldwideweb.***
