The Life of the Mayfly

New Orleans, LA
‘The Day of the Mayfly’ is a musical about the ephemeral yet beautiful life of a mayfly. It is narrated through song by an onlooking heron and follows a single day – and entire adult life – of a female mayfly. The 45-minute piece includes six original songs detailing the six major stages of the mayfly’s life: Hatching, Fleeing Danger, Metamorphosis, Mating, Birthing, and Dying. The mayfly’s day is brought to life by four dancers who play the mayflies along with the other creatures who call the riverbed home. ‘The Day of the Mayfly’ aims to be equally educational and enjoyable, as well as unavoidably philosophical.
‘The Day of the Mayfly’ was written by Theodorus - aka Theo Masters-Waage - and inspired by his childhood in England walking by the river in the spring. As the son of an entomologist, the goal is to share the beauty and fragility of insect life. Choreography and lyrics were supported by Sophia Pearson a dancer and educator who draws on her experience working with children and individuals with exceptionalities. The production is rounded out by New Orleans creatives seeking to inspire a new generation of nature appreciators.
