I was born in a Chicago suburb in 1986 as the youngest member of a family with five children. Despite the challenges we experienced, I think fondly of my childhood. I appreciate this viewpoint may have to do with the privilege of being the youngest. Unlike the older children, there were few expectations placed on me. I was able to watch my older siblings navigate situations I wouldn’t experience for years to come. I learned from their mistakes, explored in their curiosities, celebrated their highs, and felt their lows. When considering my identity amongst the siblings, I knew most of the usual roles were filled. For a time, I felt like I could just be a weird kid who explored the wonder I found in life, and that was enough. Artistic expression, the natural world, and the sciences called to me. But I did not fit into the normal ‘boxes’ of a scientist or an artist as young adult. It was a challenge to identify myself. I felt odd, and often lonely. For the past 15 years, I have pursued a career in the sciences with great dedication. But it was only when I rekindled my interest in artistic expression that I found a deeper appreciation and understanding for the sciences. Both disciplines follow a method and aim to better understand the natural world. When these interests were brought together, I felt whole. Today, I embrace the intersections in which I live. I am an avian biologist who uses genetic tools for conservation; and I am also an art practitioner who uses mixed media sculpture to express joy and curiosity in the world around us.
