Old Unconscious is an instrumental group led by composer Cory Gray. The band draws on a mixture of world music, jazz, and psychedelic rock to create trance like performances. Old Unconscious is a new breed of spiritual jazz, emotion over athleticism, soul over flash. Their highly anticipated new album The Circular Ruins (Jealous Butcher- March 2024) picks up where acclaimed 2019’s Sunfort left off. Cinematic from the first note, moody and dynamic, emotional and cathartic. With heroes like Sun Ra, Harold Budd, Selda Bagcan, Jon Hassell, Alan Toussaint, and Count Ossie as their guides, Gray leads Old Unconscious on trumpet and keyboards, with Matt Berger (Museé Mécanique) on drums, Perry Pfister on upright bass, Noah Bernstein (TuneYards, Grammies) on saxophone, and Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists, M. Ward, Califone) on percussion.
