Artists: Round 3

BADBADNOTGOOD ((( toronto, ontario )))

With early champions including acclaimed BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and Tyler The Creator, BADBADNOTGOOD released their first EP BBNG in June 2011 to wide praise. The marriage of jazz virtuosity and hip hop source material offered a new take on the traditional “standard” applied to the hip hop songbook; writing inspired arrangements for golden era classics instead of one-dimensional covers. The band hit a landmark when introducing original material into their compositions with BBNG2 in 2012. New songs like “Rotten Decay”, “Vices” or “UWM” carried on the proud heritage of musical juxtaposition by bringing together jazz, hip hop, punk, and dance music into vigorous balance. Since then, they’ve won praise from the four corners of the globe and collaborated with Bootsy Collins, RZA, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, MF Doom, and Danny Brown among many. Their notorious live performances have brought fans across the whole musical spectrum together, taking the band around the world from Coachella to Glastonbury. Now, the inseparable friends are prepping to release their biggest project to date III on prodigious young label Innovative Leisure, a highly-anticipated project ushering in the group’s newest explorations which are proving to be limitless. /// Excited to have BBNG to Boise for the first time for Treefort 2015 — look forward to multiple opportunities to catch their incredible live show.

BLACK MILK ((( detroit, michigan )))

As one of the most celebrated producers and rappers of his generation of hip-hop artists, Black Milk has conditioned fans and critics to expect the unexpected with each release. Few producers have earned the notoriety and respect he has as a musician, and when that is coupled with commanding talent as an emcee, it’s no surprise that his solo releases are met with exalted anticipation. His latest full-length rap release If There’s A Hell Below continues Black’s trend of releasing material that maintains his signature sound while pushing it into new territory. With more than a decade of industry experience and a rich catalog of recordings, Black Milk has transitioned from one of hip-hop’s young rising stars to a veteran with a uniquely well-rounded pedigree. /// Black Milk will co-headline a big hip-hop night at Knitting Factory on Saturday night of Treefort alongside Lyrics Born and a whole host of NW hip-hop talent.

LYRICS BORN ((( berkeley, california )))

Amongst the dusty records of UC Davis’ KDVS college radio station, Tom Shimura, who currently makes records as Lyrics Born, found too much to love. Sandwiched between gatefold LPs, 12-inch singles, dub versions and white-labels was a reservoir of inspiration that he would draw on for the following decades. That was then. This is now. Since his college days, Bay Area-native Lyrics Born’s raw, authentic talent has been polished to a gleaming beacon of originality in a time when it’s needed most, and it’s release marks a new era of label relations. “The old model is dead, you cant just put it out and expect people to get it”, explains LB, and the statement could easily be applied to his sound or his approach to marketing the finished product. /// Lyrics Born had been a music obsessive since his youth, and in 1993 freestyles among a group of UC Davis classmates that occupied the same cramped radio quarters began to find their way onto paper, and suddenly LB had written “Send Them”. It became the first single on the newly minted Solesides Records, a collaborative venture between himself and his accomplices who would later go on to be known internationally as Blackalicious (comprised of MC Gift of Gab and producer Chief Xcel), DJ Shadow and Lateef The Truthspeaker, an East Oakland rapper with whom he found a shared affinity for the rapid-fire lyrical volleys that would define the next step. As Latyrx (a combination of their working names) the two MCs released The Album, in 1997. The LP would go on to become a certified classic, selling 100,000 copies, yet would prove to be the tip of an even larger iceberg.

JON & JOSIAH (The Head and The Heart) ((( seattle, washington )))

Less than a month after wrapping up the touring on their second album with The Head and the Heart, Let’s Be Still, songwriters Jonathan E Russell and Josiah D Johnson pitched an elaborate tent in the foothills of Los Angeles and began to write for the band’s next studio effort. Alone with each other, two 75 lb desert tortoises, Canadian export Carleigh C Aikins, and various guitars, amps, and an upright piano borrowed from a Southern California showroom of Steinway and Sons, they got lost in their minds and the music for hours and hours. /// We are super honored that Jon & Josiah will be coming to Treefort this year to debut new THATH songs in an intimate space. Boise was a part of The Head and The Heart’s initial rise to the successes they’ve found over the last several years. Maybe we’ll even get some late night sing-a-longs at Pie Hole from them while they’re here…

DR. FRESCH ((( los angeles, california )))

After securing a position as a resident DJ for Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records in 2013, he won Insomniac’s Discovery Project Contest and was chosen to perform at Nocturnal Wonderland in San Bernardino, CA. Following his performance at Nocturnal Wonderland, Dr. Fresch went on to release his debut EP on Prep School Recordings, and was featured at #9 on Billboard Magazine’s “Next Big Sound” Chart in November 2013. Since then, Dr. Fresch has gone on to release a massively successful series of remixes, garnering multiple Top 5 spots in Hype Machine’s popular chart, amassing 6,000,000 plays on SoundCloud, and millions more on YouTube. Dr. Fresch has continued to gain serious momentum over the course of the last year, playing some of the most notable venues in America, including The Avalon, Club Nokia, Exchange LA , Dim Mak Studios, Audio SF, and Spy Bar. In Summer 2014, he performed at EDC Las Vegas and on the main stage at Red Rocks Amphitheatre for Global Dance Festival. The future continues to remain bright for Dr. Fresch, as he prepares for a nationwide touring this spring and the release of his new original EP.

THE RANGE ((( new york, new york )))

The Range is James Hinton, 25, of Providence, RI. He’s been making music since he was 13, first on a little Fostex machine recording looped drums and synthesizer. At Brown University, while studying Physics, he started making electronic music full time under the alias Stegosaurus, producing two albums under that moniker, ‘Quill’ and ‘Cower’ in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In the mid 2010 he started making music as The Range, drawing from more percussive footwork sounds. An album ‘The Big Dip’ followed for Astro Nautico (co-run by Obey City and Kuhn) in 2011, and then two EPs ‘Seneca’ and ‘disk’ for Donky Pitch. His next album ‘Nonfiction’ was released by Donky Pitch on October 14th 2013. /// “One of the most slyly gratifying electronic musicians to come along this year.” Pitchfork /// “Carves a unique niche in the electronic circuit for being neither club-convulsive nor ambient-blasé. It’s agile, vigorous, and dynamic.” VOGUE /// “The Range released one of last year’s best electronics records. Filled with jungle homages and R&B-inspired hooks, Nonfiction was one of our favorite debuts in ages.” Refinery29

LITTLE WINGS ((( southern california )))

In the late 1990s in San Luis Obispo, California, Kyle Field formed the band Little Wings, of which he is the only permanent member. In the past, the band has had members Adam Selzer on drums, Rob Kieswetter (aka Bobby Birdman)on keyboards, Mark Leece as bassist and various others. As Little Wings, Field has released over a dozen albums, under the Walking and independent K Records labels. Field also has played with Grandaddy, Lee Baggett, André Herman Dune, local funnyman Peaches and Devendra Banhart throughout the 2000s. /// “As Little Wings, Kyle Field has made a practice out of hiding out from the world while continuing to try and understand it. He’s kicked around in M Ward’s backing band, he played with Devendra Banhart for awhile. Mostly, he became known as a staple of the wide-eyed post Beat Happening K Records scene– appearing on a few Microphones records while also collaborating with Calvin Johnson. What he shares with that scene is a reverent approach to nature and an appealingly amateur vocal style. You get the feeling that he’d prefer to walk around in the moss with no shoes on than check his email.” PITCHFORK

ALL YOUR FRIENDS’ FRIENDS ((( northwest hip-hop compilation + showcase )))

The brainchild of brooklyn-based (by way of Olympia) Emcee and creative director Eprhyme and Northwest beatsmith extraordinaire Smoke M2D6 of Oldominion,THEE XNTRX is a genre-bending production team that seeks to foster boundary-crossing collaborations between often isolated groups of underground artists from across the style map. Inspired by the D.I.Y. ethics and aesthetics that have emerged from the cultural cauldron of the Northwest, THEE XNTRX wanted to pay homage to one of the last bastions of real independent music — Olympia’s very own indy icon — K. In partnership with Label owner Calvin Johnson, Eprhyme and Smoke set out to create a vision of a viable future for underground hip hop in the Northwest by digging deeply into the region’s past musical movements and moments. The fruits of this labor of love appear artfully arranged in a boom-bap bouquet of bangers and mash-ups for self-proclaimed players and just-can’t-help-it haters alike. “All Your Friend’s Friends” is a Northwest Hip Hop Compilation album constructed almost entirely off of samples from the K catalog. It is the first installment in a forthcoming series of strangely familiar sounds you’ve never smelled before. It features over 30 of the regions’ most unique rhymers including members of NW megacrews Oldominion and the Sandpeople. All Your Friend’s Friends represents sample-based Hip Hop culture at its best — taking something dope from the past, and making something fresh for the future.
