Storyfort Summer 2020 Events

Storyfort is hosting some social-distanced fun this summer!

In collaboration with Idaho Botanical Gardens, Storyfort is putting on a summer reading series featuring COVID Cultural Commissioning Fund recipients PLUS there is a writing contest exploring the what was, the what is, and the what is to come.

Learn more about the festivities below.

June 27 – August 11 @ Idaho Botanical Gardens
This story series reflects an array of themes from fiction writers, poets, creative nonfiction writers, and even a writer who is penning a “folk rock opera” (which should be awesome!) at the Idaho Botanical Garden on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. These writers have recently received an award from the COVID Cultural Commissioning Fund*.

The series will take place in the Meditation Garden and the shady, expansive green area that surrounds it. Bring your own low-back chairs or blanket. Picnic baskets are welcome or guests can purchase food and beverages from the on-site vendors.

Attendance will be capped at 100, which will very easily allow artists and attendees 6′ – 10′ between themselves and others. Please be mindful of other guests and practice social-distancing at all times. Face masks are encouraged for your safety and the safety of others. All PA and event equipment will be sanitized regularly.

We will be accepting cash donations at the events to support the local artist, Storyfort, and the Idaho Botanical Garden.

Our theme, “The Before and The After,” is intended to prompt writers to creatively express narratives and poetry of changing, pivoting, evolving, devolving, and metamorphizing — exploring the what was, the what is, and the what is to come.

Our theme is not intended to speak directly one-to-one about the current state of the world, but we will favor work that creatively explores and informs our lives and sensibilities during this time. We’re looking for brave, artful writing that surprises us in the very best way, so bring us your best stuff! We look forward to reading.

Writers may enter as many times as they’d like. The entry fee is applied to each new submission.

Entry fees ($10 for standard entry; $20 for standard entry and a limited-run contest chapbook) will help support Storyfort artists and programming as well as participating writers in this complicated time.

Writing categories include:
– Short story: Up to 1,200 words. One story per entry.
– Micro Personal Essay: Up to 750 words. One essay per entry.
– Poetry: Up to five pages. One to five poems per entry. A single poem or coalescing group of poems will be selected as the winner in this category.

Winners and judges’ picks will be invited to read at future Storyfort events. First place winners in each category will receive cash, a Treefort 5-Day wristband, and Storyfort/Treefort merchandise.

A five-person judging panel will decide first place winners. Each judge will also be awarding two judges picks in each genre. Judges picks will receive Treefort/Storyfort merchandise and will be published along with the winning work in the “The Before and The After” limited-run chapbook.

Find the complete contest guidelines and submit your work via Submittable.
