LA-based band Grouplove has quickly become one of music’s most exhilarating young acts. The quintet’s second full length album SPREADING RUMOURS arrived in September 2013 and was met with a raft of acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, Los Angeles Times, NYLON, and National Public Radio who called it “ludicrously easy to love.” The collection was produced by the band’s own Ryan Rabin.

Grouplove first came together in 2009 and soon were hailed as a great live act, both as headliners and at such international festivals as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Reading + Leeds Festivals, and Glastonbury. NEVER TRUST A HAPPY SONG arrived in 2011, making a stellar chart debut among the top 5 on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” album chart for new and developing acts.

Treefort wouldn’t be the same without local indie rock band Built to Spill playing a set or two (or three). The band has played every Treefort Music Fest with the exception of Treefort 2017 where Built to Spill’s Doug Martsch played an acoustic set at the Boise Contemporary Theater.

Built to Spill started in 1992 and have a large discography covering eight albums, a few compilation albums, and a good amount of extended-plays.

Built to Spill has returned to the band’s original concept of having a shifting rotation of non-permanent members. The current lineup features Boise bassist Melanie Radford (Marshall Poole, Blood Lemon) and New Mexico drummer Teresa Cruces (Prism Bitch) and longtime BTS contributer, Doug Martsch.

( providence, rhode island )
Over the course of its two-decade existence, Lightning Bolt has revolutionized underground rock in immeasurable ways. The duo broke the barrier between stage and audience by setting themselves up on the floor in the midst of the crowd. Their momentous live performances and the mania they inspired paved the way for similar tactics used by Dan Deacon and literally hundreds of others. Similarly, the band’s recordings have always been chaotic, roaring, blown out documents that sound like they could destroy even the toughest set of speakers. Fantasy Empire, Lightning Bolt’s sixth album and first in five years, is a fresh take from a band intent on pushing themselves musically and sonically while maintaining the aesthetic that has defined not only them, but an entire generation of noisemakers.

( orange county, california )
Dance With The Dead aka Justin Pointer and Tony Kim are two American musicians from California. They produce electronic music based on melodies made with synthesizers, with the peculiarity of having sounds coming from the 80s, as well as guitar riffs due to their heavy metal backgrounds.

These two musicians have known each other since childhood and were even neighbors. Their influences vary between metal bands such as Mötley Crüe, Pantera, Def Leppard and electronic pillars such as Daft Punk and Kavinsky. Their visual universe focuses on horror film themes (special mention to Frankenstein), as well as melodies of their tracks.

( freedon, new jersey )
Steve Marion – the songwriter, guitarist, and producer who has made four studio records of primarily word-less, guitar-first music as Delicate Steve – has released his fifth LP, titled Till I Burn Up, available now via ANTI- Records. The album name comes from a line in Dr. John’s “Walk on Guilded Splinters” where Steve misheard John’s actual phrase “Tit Alberta” as “Till I Burn Up.”

Now nearly ten years into his career, Steve is a cult artist of his time. He has been called to record with his heroes (Paul Simon, Kanye West) and contribute significantly to his contemporaries’ modern masterworks (Amen Dunes, Freedom), all the while recording and releasing his own critically hailed work and sharing the stage with The Black Keys, Tame Impala, Mac DeMarco, Growlers and others.

( san jose, california )
Xiu Xiu is an American experimental band formed in 2002 by singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart in San Jose, California. Currently, the line-up consists of Stewart (the only constant member since formation), Angela Seo, Thor Harris, and Christopher Pravdica. The band’s name comes from the film Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl and has influenced the sound of their music according to Stewart.

When the band was founded in 2002, the band’s sound was characterized by its use of indigenous instruments and programmed drums in place of traditional rock instruments: harmonium, mandolin, brass bells, gongs, keyboards, and a cross between a guitarrón mexicano and a cello for bass, etc. Xiu Xiu released their eleventh new album titled Girl with Basket of Fruit on February 8, 2019 via Polyvinyl.

( san francisco, california )
Sonny & the Sunsets are a beautiful West Coast thing. Birthed from the sand, the surf, and twilight campfires down in Ocean Beach, Sonny & the Sunsets’ busted beach-pop songs spark recollections of doo wop’s otherworldly despair, a dose of goofball humor from the Michael Hurley school, and positive possibilities exuded by Jonathan Richman.

Helmed by the singer / songwriter, playwright, author & onetime troubadour Sonny Smith, The Sunsets have featured a revolving door lineup that have included Shayde Sartin, Ryan Browne, Kelley Stoltz and Tahlia Harbour. Adopting a range of sounds Smith’s sardonic, laid-back style is interwoven throughout his compelling songwriting and vocals.

In 2012, Patterson began her solo career, releasing her first full-length album titled All Princes, I.

In 2015, Patterson released her second full-length album titled Woman to Woman. Sometimes you have to turn off your brain and let your body sing. That’s what Esme Patterson did on her third full-length, We Were Wild, released on Grand Jury Music in 2016. “At its core, rock ‘n’ roll is where madness and order collide. Where our sexual, raw, animal nature meets our heart and mind. On this album I explored deeper, more far out sonic spaces. I hunted the vibe through vast wilderness,” says the Portland-based songwriter.

Recent LA-transplants Spooky Mansion produce a soundscape of breezy, sultry surf-rock imbued with the passion of soul and the energy of rock-n-roll. Originally having their roots in the Bay Area and led by the rickety rasp of charismatic singer/songwriter Grayson Converse, the band is comprised of drummer Rob Mills, bassist Marty Reising, guitarist Charlie McCone, and guitarist Braden Lyle. Their music is soulful garage-rock, propelled by energetic guitars, nimble drums, and sweeping and invitingly fuzzy vocals.

Their newest single, “Real Jerk”, premiered on PASTE August 28th and was noted for its “sunny guitar riffs and Converse’s unique and sultry voice.”

( memphis, tennessee )
Spaceface is led by Jake Ingalls who also plays guitar and synthesizer in The Flaming Lips. The experience reflects that influence, as the band works to bring the concert grade experience to a club level. The group’s music offers a refreshing approach on psychedelic rock, with transparent ’70s references but also strikingly modern elements that make this trick something to behold. Their 2017 record Sun Kids was described by KEXP as “hazy, psychedelic pop music, elegantly composed.”

2019 saw the release of their latest work, “Panormic View”. The song bounces along on a funky ’70s groove with light psychedelic effects that never seem to overpower the strong melodies.
