We’re extremely pleased with how this year’s Treefort Music Fest lineup has come together — continuing our quest to represent the diversity of Boise’s rich and growing music scene.

For Treefort 2013 we’ve partnered with several local entities, musicians and promoters to help curate the festival from multiple perspectives, in addition to our diligent work internally to seek some of the most promising emerging artists from both inside and outside our fine city. In this final announcement, we also give you a few returning faces, as well as some fresh headliners to round out the good times.

The musicians performing at this year’s festival are just one piece of the community we intend to represent, but as you’ll see below, it’s a rather large piece. At press time, we’ve crested 250 musical artists that will perform at Treefort 2013.

THE WALKMEN

It’s been ten years since The Walkmen made their debut album, Everybody Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone. Ten years since they mixed the lovingly recorded analogue tapes down to the cheapest CD burner they could find. Ten years since lead singer Hamilton Leithauser snapped guitarist Paul Maroon’s arm in a celebratory wrestling match. Ten years since critics attached them to a New York scene they never wanted any part of. The Walkmen are the great New York band of their generation, and with the release of their 7th studio album Heaven on Fat Possum Records last year, they have delivered their third killer album in a row. /// We’re ecstatic to have them headline the Treefort Main Stage on Saturday night of Treefort 2013.

YACHT

YACHT is a conceptual pop group based in Los Angeles, California. It’s the brainchild of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, whose wide-ranging interests and deep-seated ADD cause YACHT to frequently metamorphose: from band to belief system, from disco infiltrators to punk rockers, from performance artists to graphic designers, publishers, sculptors, or philosophers. /// YACHT was born in 2002 in Portland, OR and has made frequent stops in Idaho over the years, from house shows up in Moscow to packed sweaty dance parties at Neurolux here in Boise. Pumped to have them on our outdoor Main Stage for fans of all ages at Treefort 2013.

GOLD PANDA

Hailing from Chelmsford in Essex, but now located to Berlin, Germany, Gold Panda started writing beats and collaborating a few years ago, beginning a journey that ultimately saw him nominated in the BBC’s sound of 2010 list and won the Guardian newspaper’s prestigious First Album Award 2010 for his debut album Lucky Shiner. Gold Panda begins 2013 with the release of the Trust EP – the first full EP he’s released since his pre-Lucky Shiner days. That release will be followed later in the year by his second album. /// Excited to have him in Boise for the first time as he will be headlining one of our late night electronic shows on Friday night of Treefort Music Fest 2013.

BROTHER ALI

As a kid growing up in the Midwest, Minneapolis-based hip-hop artist Brother Ali was well aware that he was different. While there were plenty of parallels between him and his peers, there was one thing in specific that always distinguished him from the crowd: his albinism. He released his fourth album Mourning In America and Dreaming In Color last fall. Melding the zeitgeist of classic works such as Ice Cube’s critical 1991 album Death Certificate and Marvin Gaye’s 1971 sociopolitical opus What’s Goin’ On with his keen observations on topics such as race, the Occupy movement, and the hypocrisy of war, Brother Ali has crafted a fresh lyrical approach and dynamic new sound – the result is a stunning collection of hard-hitting lyrics and beats. /// He’ll help wrap up Treefort 2013 with a special 18+ performance at Reef on Sunday night of the festival.

K.FLAY

You may not expect one of the most compelling new voices in hip hop to wield dual psychology and sociology degrees from Stanford University or find inspiration in the buttoned-up world of indie rock, but for K.Flay, defying expectations is simply part of the game. Kristine Flaherty grew up outside of Chicago, devouring her father’s classic rock records and staying up late dancing to Parliament-Funkadelic in the living room. It was this same musical open-mindedness that would later spark her artistic development. /// One of the most requested repeats from Treefort 2012, very excited to have her back for an encore Treefort performance this year.

TYPHOON

Typhoon released a new 7″ last fall on Tender Loving Empire that further fueled the hunger for their sophomore full length due out sometime in 2013. Between opening for The Decemberists in town and a late night Pie Hole performance and a celebrated Treefort Main Stage set opening for Built To Spill last year and a couple of packed Visual Arts Collective shows, Typhoon have been welcomed with open arms into our Boise music scene. They aren’t playing many shows outside of Portland until their album comes out, but psyched they too will be returning to play Treefort 2013 — this time headlining Neurolux on Friday night. Best plan on getting there early.

SLOW MAGIC

Slow Magic is the sound made by an unknown imaginary friend. /// This dreamwave/experimental/chill electronic project has been gathering growing attention from an international audience. Slow Magic will play Boise for the first time as part of the Friday night Treefort late electronic show with Gold Panda, Natasha Kmeto and others. Get blissed.

MT. ST. HELENS VIETNAM BAND
((( seattle, washington )))
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band exploded on to the Seattle music scene in the summer of 2008. By the following spring they had signed to the influential indie label Dead Oceans, and released their first album, grabbing national attention from Spin, NME, Paste, and a host of other major publications. After two full-length albums, hundreds of shows played across North America, and a period of hibernation, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band have reemerged. /// They will return to Boise to be a part of the first night of Treefort 2013 and help christen the El Korah Shrine as a new Treefort venue with label family mates Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Foxygen and others.

DAUWD

UK producer Dauwd creates music with complexity most contemporary producers shy away from. Found sounds are thickly laden over multi-timbred synths. Vocal and instrumental stabs punctuate organic and evolving passages guided always by driving percussion and immaculate low-end production. His productions are full and intricate with a wealth of sounds building warm atmospheres that are unusual within dance music. Dauwd spent a chunk of 2011 releasing delicate future garage singles and he’s now set to release his debut EP, Heat Division, on March 12th via Ghostly (US) and Pictures (UK/EU).

DEEP SEA DIVER

Voted Best Pop Band in Seattle 2012 by the Seattle Weekly. “It’s been a while since a local band has had as much star potential as Deep Sea Diver. The trio’s founder and frontwoman, California transplant Jessica Dobson, is already a name in the music world, having played in touring bands with Beck, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Shins, and her own band has just as much poise and polish as those more famous acts. Deep Sea Diver puts on an unbelievably tight live show, with Dobson singing and riffing on her electric guitar, backed by bassist John Raines and drummer Peter Mansen—Dobson’s husband, who behind his kit looks like Animal from the Muppets. The band’s debut LP, this year’s History Speaks, is a collection of nine emotive, elegant pop songs that retain all the live-wire energy of their stage performances. History Speaks was self-released, but it’s only a matter of time before a label snaps them up.” — Erin K Thompson, Seattle Weekly

USELESS EATERS

Seth Sutton learned a lot from Jay Reatard in the last two years of his life—a time that included taking Sutton’s band (Useless Eaters) on tour and pressing one of their many limited singles—but one lesson stood out above the rest. Jay always felt like he was running out of time,” explains Sutton, “so he thought it was important to try and be as musically productive as possible.” Sutton also references Legs McNeil’s legendary Please Kill Me book — “It showed me that punk is more of an idea and an attitude than a fashion statement,” says Sutton, a self-taught musician who considers dropping out of high school “the best decision I’ve ever made,” because it “gave me the freedom to focus on my art and music.” /// I feel like Sutton is very much on our wavelength and am psyched to have him here in Boise for Treefort this year.

WYMOND MILES

Four years ago Wymond Miles, lead guitar player in San Francisco’s The Fresh & Onlys, began writing solo material thematically based on the concepts of eschatology, anthroposophy, and Gnostic and Hermetic symbolism. Drawing from a vast musical pool of inspiration, including Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt, Arvo Part, and Nikki Sudden amongst others, Earth Has Doors — released last year on Sacred Bones Records — is Miles’ first solo release. Treefort 2013 will be the first appearance in Boise for Miles and his band.

Y LA BAMBA

With their new album, Court the Storm, Portland OR’s Y La Bamba return with a haunting second full-length of delicately crafted art folk. “The voice is most effective when it’s indistinguishable from the emotion of the lyric as well as the drama of the rhythm and chords” says NPR’s Felix Contreras when discussing Y La Bamba’s stunning front-woman, adding “…Luz Elena Mendoza stands very near the front of this pack.” On the Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) produced Court the Storm, these ethereal vocals combine with bittersweet melodies and thrumming Latin-inspired rhythms to form an indie pop masterpiece. /// Y La Bamba just wrapped up another tour with The Lumineers and will be back in Boise to play Saturday night at Treefort 2013.

BRAINSTORM

“BRAINSTORM is an experimental-pop group from Portland, Oregon, whose sound is big and hard to define, yet strikingly elegant in its variety. Pulling heavily on cumbia rhythms, western African guitar, and nostalgic soul, the band weaves their influences into a coherent fabric of art-pop, executed masterfully and endlessly compelling.” /// BRAINSTORM headlined the big annual Radio Boise Block Party last August that was also a pre-Tour De Fat party. Since that time, their debut album Heat Waves came out on Tender Loving Empire followed by a big US Tour gaining acclaim from the likes of Bob Boilen (NPR’s “All Songs Considered”) and more. They play the Treefort Main Stage Sunday afternoon.

SLAM DUNK

Slam Dunk are a 5 piece rock-n -roll group from Victoria, British Columbia. Since 2009 the band has self released a 7” (Only Fun) followed by the full-length album The Shivers. The band just recently put out their newest album Welcome To Miami (F:UM) which has caused people other than their friends to come to their shows. Chaotic garage-soul with a western twang and a ton of hooks. Works great in a house party setting or in a stadium.

SOCIAL STUDIES

With much of 2010 and 2011 spent on the road, the San Francisco’s Social Studies returned to the studio in early 2012, enlisting the skills of ascendant Oakland engineer Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Deerhoof, Thao & Mirah) to streamline their sound and refine their approach. With the stated goal of remaining as true to their hypnotic and driving live show as possible, the band dug deeper into texture, mood and repetition, stripping away some of the ornate flourishes that were a past hallmark to leave an anthemic core. The result is the album Developer, a bold push for the band and their best work to date. They play Boise for the first time on Sunday March 24th — afternoon set on the Treefort Main Stage.

TEA COZIES

Nestled somewhere between garage rock and indie pop lives a Seattle band called Tea Cozies. Taking their influence from 60s British Invasion bands and 90s indie rock, this four-piece creates a cyclone of reverb drenched guitars, girl-on-girl harmonies, and surf rock beats. /// Been looking forward to their Boise debut for a couple of years now.

B.DOLAN
((( hanton city, rhode island )))
In 1999 B. Dolan moved from Rhode Island to NYC to pursue his passion. He had been writing and rapping for years, but Brooklyn’s Nuyorican Poets Cafe introduced him to spoken word which is when his career as a stage performer began. He moved back to RI in 2002 and it proved to be a wise one for Dolan. Over the next few years he tapped into the local arts community, volunteered for at-risk youth programs, created the consumer activist website Knowmore.org, teamed up with Sage Francis, signed to Strange Famous Records and toured relentlessly from 2005 onward. B. Dolan will be coming out to Treefort 2013 with Sage Francis and playing on Thursday night with him at Reef.

HUMMINGBIRD OF DEATH

Hummingbird Of Death started in 2005 in Boise, Idaho. Their mission is to thrash with maximum speed and aggression. Their vision is progressive and forward-looking, incorporating many styles of extreme music, without losing sight of the spirit of old-school thrash and punk rock. They have recorded two LPs (including the recently released Skullvalanche on Deep Six Records) and numerous EPs and split releases. They have toured the west coast, southwestern US and British Columbia. They will be a part of an all ages hardcore/punk/grunge bill headlined by Deathfix and also featuring many others from this vein of the Boise scene that will run most of the day and into the night on Sunday of Treefort 2013.

THE BLANK TAPES

In 2010, he got not one but two surprise smash hits in Brazil, leading to his first tour outside North America. He shared bills with sci-fi garage legends Thee Oh Sees and home-taper extraordinaire R. Stevie Moore in Europe. He provided much of the soundtrack to the cult surf film ‘Stoked and Broke’ and took a stripped-down Blank Tapes to Japan to tour with the film. And he custom-wrote a special song for Burger Records Weiner Dog Benefit comp, doing his utmost to help a little puppy pay a vet bill.

EXPO ‘70 ((( kansas city, missouri )))
Expo ‘70 is known throughout the experimental psychedelic drone community as being one of the top artists of the genre. The sole project of Justin Wright, he has been making improvisational music under the moniker since 2003 and produced a number of releases highly sought after by music enthusiasts and completest around the globe. Wright’s compositions of organic guitar based drone draws comparisons to Brian Eno, Ash Ra Tempel, A.R. & Machines, Tangerine Dream, SunnO))) and Earth, but not directly sounding like any of those artists in their entirety.

THE 4ONTHEFLOOR

They pull no punches. They won’t bore you with trying to explain how multi-genre and indefinable they are. The 4onthefloor play rock music. The 4onthefloor play blues music. And they do it in 4/4 time. Through gutsy Delta–Blues and classic Americana, The 4onthefloor put their signature stomp on these classic genres with not one but four bass drums pulsing to the beat.

LITTLE MISS & THE NO NAMES

Little Miss and the No Names is a female fronted punk band from Boise Idaho, formed in April of 2010. With an influence of late seventies punk,and early eighties hardcore. The mix between old schoolers Onj and Paul, and the new gen. Corey, and Rebecca create a powerful attack of angst filled punk with an oldschool style.

TRUCKASAURAS ((( seattle, washington )))
Since Truckasauras’ first performance, they have been repeatedly redefining electronic music in the live setting. From underground house parties, to impromptu street performances, to proper rock venues, Truckasauras’ explosive lo-fi, audio-visual, live sets continually raise the bar for not just electronic music, but anyone seeking to captivate an audience and rock the party.

SUN ANGLE ((( portland, oregon )))
Propelled by artful, animalistic urgency, Sun Angle’s debut full-length record, Diamond Junk—as the title suggests—creates exhilarating tension between chaos and beauty. Blending SST punk, Cumbia and a wash of psychedelic filth, Sun Angle ride the line between chaos and pop, making music all it’s own.

MANCUB ((( denver, colorado )))
Described as “a sound that will most likely define a new breed of dance music for Denver”, ManCub is producer/multi-instrumentalist Alex Anderson. ManCub is known for his wildly entertaining live shows which feature a strictly hardware setup of samplers, Casiotone keyboards, analog synths, effect pedals, and circuit bent weirdness used to tastefully blend elements of noise with electro-pop songwriting.

HENHOUSE PROWLERS ((( chicago, illinois )))
After eight years of hard work and a relentless tour schedule, Chicago’s Henhouse Prowlers have gained a reputation for their highly original, tradition-inspired bluegrass built on a strong foundation of intricate harmonies and electrifying stage energy.

DARK TIME SUNSHINE ((( portland, oregon )))
Dark Time Sunshine is comprised of Onry Ozzborn of Grayskul (Rhymesayers) and producer Zavala.

AAN ((( portland, oregon )))
Aan is a fearless experimental pop band from Portland, Oregon mixing heavily textured guitars with rich vocal harmonies.

Born in Portland, OR in the year of our Lord, 2009, And And And is a 5 piece band of thieves and gypsies that play rock music that could possibly be compared to The Kinks and Pavement thrown into a blender and left for several days in the sun.

HILLSTOMP ((( portland, oregon )))
Drawing heavily from north Mississippi trance blues, a bit from the hills of Appalachia and stealing energy from punkabilly, Portland Oregon duo Hillstomp create a raucous hill-country blues-stomp with a fiery youth and vigor. It comes clanging and tumbling out of an assortment of vintage mics, buckets, cans and BBQ lids drenched in rambunctious slide guitar.

HOLIDAY FRIENDS ((( astoria, oregon )))
The core members of what is now Holiday Friends met while attending college at the University of Idaho in 2008. They toured the West with Blind Pilot last year and are working on their second album.

YOU ARE PLURAL ((( olympia, washington )))
Based in Olympia, WA, You Are Plural is the unlikely marriage of wurlitzer and cello which present unending dualities: the trio’s percussive yet melodic style, the intense yet soothing rhythms, Jen Grady’s strong yet delicate voice complementing Ephriam Nagler’s sonorous yet airy one. Broad sweeping vocal harmonies weave in and out of sparse instrumentation, then suddenly they switch roles: the music swells as the haunting voices fade out. The music is palpable, almost visual and wholly sensory.

TEENS ((( boise, idaho )))
Teens emerged from Boise in late 2010. Their Treefort 2012 fogged out set damn near brought the Red Room to it’s shaky shaky knees. Expect their Sunday night Red Room set at Treefort 2013 to be one big cherry on top of another wild wild weekend.

KITHKIN ((( seattle, washington )))
Kithkin are a Cascadian youth tribe out to spread the hidden knowledge of the forests. Through its performances, Kithkin hopes to confront crowds about the impending ‘End of Things’ through joyous and psychedelic catharsis.

BOY EATS DRUM MACHINE ((( portland, oregon )))
Boy Eats Drum Machine manipulates a turntable and sampler to make bass-heavy breaks, then switches between his DJ setup, tom-tom drum, and tenor saxophone to meld them into catchy, post-rock jams. His voice carries an 80′s pop edge, his turntablism the echoey goodness of the 70′s.

FLASHLIGHTS ((( denver, colorado )))
Flashlights are baaaack. Electro pop goodness from the Holy Underground crew in Denver. Slayed our launch party and back to play the Friday late night electronic show at Treefort 2013.

OWLRIGHT ((( boise, idaho )))
B. Mansion and Richard Palisades are Owlright. Owlright currently has two releases available on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, iTunes, etc. The LP COOL SHOOS DOOD and the PLUHNK EP. More releases planned for 2013.

LEARNING TEAM ((( bellingham, washington )))
Buried beneath the complex instrumentation of this Pacific Northwest five-piece’s music is simplicity; straightforward Pop songs unabashedly from the heart, born of the overcast skies and midnight house shows of Bellingham, Washington.

qp ((( boise, id and seattle, wa )))
qp is a burgeoning bass music production/dj duo consisting of Peter Schott and James Stevens from Boise and Seattle, who make music across the internet, rarely spending time in the same studio.

CC/NN ((( denver, colorado )))
Marilyn and Elliott Baker, the brother/sister, trans-atlantic duo otherwise known as CCERULEANN, released their debut self-titled EP this November on Denver’s, HUG Records. CC/NN is the solo moniker of Elliott Baker, a prolific producer in his own right, who is rapidly building upon on his already massive body of work.

RUMTUM ((( denver, colorado )))
RUMTUM is Cleveland native John Hastings, who is known mostly for his collaborative work in the sample heavy, electro-funk project MR & RT (Monster Rally & RUMTUM), having already released albums on Lefse’s WAAGA imprint & Seattle’s Gold Robot Records.

HOLLOW WOOD ((( boise, idaho )))
5 members, Idaho dwellers, Songs sung to an empty room.

SCHOOL KNIGHTS ((( denver, colorado )))
SK is a noise/pop band from Denver, Colorado. Met at a slayer show in ’89. carved slayer into each-others arms. blood dripped out onto the floor, spelled out “school knights”. band was born.

IN THE WHALE ((( denver, colorado )))
With an undeniable live show and a tenacious work ethic, this Denver band won’t be local for long. Brace yourself.

SHADES ((( boise, idaho )))
The four-piece band from Boise, Idaho known to the universe as Shades bring an eclectic mix of woozy melodic synths, crunched drums, smooth vocals and sweet vibes. Their debut album, Clear Motions, is a fantastic collection of songs that flow brilliantly into each other. A mix of chillwave, dance rock and shoegaze electronica that warms the soul.

GAYZE ((( boise, idaho )))
Featuring members of TEENS, Deaf Kid, Art Fad and with a new 7″ EP Black Soul co-written by David Wood (TEENS) and Cody Mauser (The Rich Hands) that came out in January 2013, Gayze is a mostly local super group of sorts further stirring up the garage scene in Boise.

LAMONT KOHNER ((( boise, idaho )))
Lamont Kohner is a dub / techno project of electronic musician and producer Patrick Benolkin (aka Electricwest and Eluder). We love his debut album Willamette Dubs. He debuted his live set at our Treefort Launch Party back in January and excited to have him on the festival proper as well.

ASH REITER ((( san francisco, california )))
Bay Area indie darling’s Ash Reiter bring you pop tunes that bring to mind a modern Fleetwood Mac. Drenched in warm vocal harmonies, soaring with catchy guitar lines, and driven by a rhythm section that will make you wanna jump, their sound is irresistible. Playing the 20 Sided Records Showcase at The Red Room on Saturday afternoon.

CUSTOMARY ((( boise, idaho )))
Customary is a local hip hop artist with an east coast influence. With a sound similar to J Dilla and Pete Rock, Customary brings a musical production that you can feel. Look forward to a Customary set with band at Treefort 2013.

FIRST BORNS ((( boise, idaho )))
First Borns combine the DIY ethos of the members’ earlier punk days with a more refined approach to songwriting and instrumentation. Been really digging the direction this band is headed.

NICK JAINA ((( portland, oregon )))
Nick Jaina is a musician and writer from Portland, Oregon. He has released five albums on Hush Records, while also composing ballets, film and play soundtracks. His next album, Primary Perception, will be released in April on Fluff and Gravy Records.

CERBERUS REX ((( boise, idaho )))
Cerberus Rex is a four headed, river of Styx guarding, dog king of rock. They will play their heavy pscyhedelic rocknroll at the Evil Wine Showcase at The Red Room on Friday night.

BONEFISH SAM & HIS ORCHESTRA ((( boise, idaho )))
Hearing Bonefish Sam is like hearing the colors you see before you fall asleep, after a whole weekend of playing Atari (the old one).

Family band. Music for everyone.

LUCID AISLE ((( boise, idaho )))
Lucid Aisle is an alternative, psychedelic, space rock grunge band located in Boise, Idaho.

NEIGHBORS ((( seattle, washington )))
Over the course of two records – 2011′s Puros Exitos and 2012′s John in Babeland – guitarist, producer, singer and Philadelphia transplant José Díaz turns casual conversations into leftfield anthems that may or may not bear a stylistic debt to “college rock,” whatever that was.

SUN BLOOD STORIES ((( boise, idaho )))
With a haunting and electric sound reminiscent of The Black Keys, Tom Waits, or even the late great R.L. Burnside, Sun Blood Stories is the blues pushed into the red. But instead of coming from the Mississippi Delta or the streets of Chicago, this is a sound straight out of the mountains of Idaho.

EDMOND DANTES ((( boise, idaho )))
Edmond Dantes is a project by two Boise music music teachers who share a mutual love for classic Motown and synths. Though the character Edmond Dantes could aptly called the king of revenge– the duo Edmond Dantes are more interested in sharing melody and song.

GRANDMA KELSEY ((( boise, idaho )))
A solitary, wingless creature armed with autoharp, guitar, and song, Grandma Kelsey’s disarming voice blends poetic narratives and structured melodies that draws the hearts of her listeners.

SOUTH OF FRANCE ((( denver, colorado )))
South Of France is an indie-pop band that was initially started by multi-intstrumentalist /producer/songwriter Jeff Cormack in 2011. The music of Cloud|Splitter falls loosely under the genres of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and Electronica, incorporating stylistic elements of jazz fusion, dubstep, drum & bass, and psychedelia.
