2nd Artist Announcement for Treefort Music Fest 2014

POLIÇA began as a collaboration between fellow Gayngs’ members Channy Casselle and Ryan Olson in June of 2011.
By July they had completed 11 songs, made the key additions of drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson, bass player Chris Bierdan, and headed into the studio. After Mike Noyce (Bon Iver) lent his voice on Lay Your Cards Out and Wandering Star, the record was brought to Austin, TX to be mixed with Jim Eno (Spoon). In a few days, the LP was completed and the band Poliça was formed. On stage, the original beats composed by Olson play amongst Channy’s passionate vocals & an intense rhythm section, that lead to a description somewhere in the area of electro-r&b goth-pop. /// This band has been one that team Treefort has been collectively wanting to grace one of our stages from the beginning. We are incredibly excited that that will finally happen this year as Poliça will come to Boise for the first time to play the Treefort Main Stage on Sunday March 23rd alongside The Joy Formidable and others.

A producer and DJ from Columbus, Ohio, RJD2 is undoubtedly one of the most hyped beatmakers in independent hip-hop today. He got his start making tracks for the MHZ crew (Copywrite, Camu Tao, Tage Proto), then worked his way up with a series of singles and mix tapes before unleashing his critically-acclaimed debut LP, Dead Ringer, on the uber-hip Def Jux label in 2002. Loaded with moody samples, dusty drum breaks, dialogue clips, and pieces of vintage soul jams, the mostly instrumental Dead Ringer elicited rave reviews from a wide variety of listeners, and was bound for many critic’s “best of 2002″ lists. In a genre filled with ambient spacemen and droning techno fromage, Rjd2 brought a sense of song structure and vitality that was sorely missing, harkening back to a time when instrumental groups like Booker T. and the MG s got radio play (no joke). And the accolades rolled in. From industry luminaries like Chris Blackwell, to members of Radiohead and The Strokes, to ?uestlove of The Roots (who nominated Dead Ringer for the prestigious Short List awards in 2003), to DJ Shadow, Rj soon became a favorite of those in-the-know.

After Dan Deacon’s transcendent Main Stage performance and wild Linen Building DJ set to close out Treefort 2013, we couldn’t imagine not bringing him back again this year. As his DJ set came to a frenzied, Bohemian Rhapsodied, crowd-surfed shout-a-long peak, he perfectly captured the essence of Treefort with an inspired monologue about the importance of not moving to a bigger city, but rather to make the town you live in what you want it to be. The understanding reached between him and our community in the span of a mere evening was truly moving and I could not have asked for a better way to bring the second Treefort Music Fest to a close. Thus, we have invited him back to help kick the third edition of Treefort Music Fest off at El Korah Shrine on Thursday, March 20th. This year, in addition to performing, he will also be taking part in the new tech-orientated component of the festival — Hackfort, which you will hear more about soon. Also, you may want to download Dan Deacon’s app if you haven’t already.

Universally hailed as a thrilling new figure in music for his edgy, lo-fi debut back in 2002, The Headphone Masterpiece, Cody ChesnuTT is a soul troubadour whose frank, socially conscious ruminations on life continue to challenge popular notions of what modern soul music can look and sound like. /// “If you combined equal parts James Brown and Otis Redding, a splash of Hendrix and a dash of old time swagger, you might come close to figuring out just what Cody ChesnuTT is made of. In his own way, he’s found out how to blend hip-hop beats, soulful jazz stylings, silky smooth vocals and a sprinkling of Motown showmanship into a performance that feels almost… nostalgic. Cody’s pure love for the show and the art of the song truly comes from his heart, bursting at the seams with passion and care.” — Spinning Platters

Iamsu!, the 23-year-old producer and rapper with a mop afro and playful laugh, enjoys the challenge of bridging two worlds. Known both for his grounded storytelling and command of West Coast party music’s slapping palette, he’s a thoughtful introvert and high-energy leader all in one. Along with his crew HBK Gang, he’s offering listeners a new brand of positive, pro-individuality rap that might be mistaken for preachy if it weren’t so fun. /// “Richmond rapper-producer Iamsu! was a shoo-in for SPIN’s Real Hottest MCs list earlier this year. The young star has been steadily bridging Bay Area ghetto-flamboyance to laid-back Los Angeles vibes with an emphasis on all things ratchet (or trap, if you prefer).” — Spin, June 2013

Tony Simon, a/k/a Blockhead, has been making and releasing utterly distinctive, funky and emotive music for 15 years. Blockhead grew up in downtown New York City. As the son of an artist, surrounded by visual culture, he early on found that his passion was for music, for the sonic. A fan of a whole range of sounds, especially hip-hop, Blockhead steadily built a tremendous collection of tapes and later CDs from innumerable artists, a quiet accumulation of knowledge and know-how. After a brief stint as a rapper, he realized his calling was behind the boards and not on the mic – and from there he began to produce beats. Since making that decision, he’s kept pretty busy: carving a niche as a quality underground beatmaker that people call when they want something special. Very pleased to bring him to Boise for the first time for Treefort 2014.
THIS WILL DESTROY YOU
((( austin/dallas, texas )))
“San Marcos, Texas’ finest This Will Destroy You hate it when people call them “post-rock.” They prefer “doomgaze.” So do I, actually. The self-appointed term cleverly conjoins “doom metal” with “shoegaze,” accurately depicting the brooding heaviness and gauzy melodicism that distinguish This Will Destroy You’s music. TWDY also probably loathe comparisons to fellow Texans Explosions in the Sky, but damn it, similarities between the two bands do exist. Both groups favor lull-explode dynamics marked by placid passages that build to meaningful crescendos. Thankfully, TWDY imbue said dynamics with great poignancy. Bring earplugs, preferably wrapped in a hanky.” DAVE SEGAL, Portland Mercury

The DWARVES are Rock Legends. Birthed in the garage rock revival of the 1980’s over 30 years ago they continue to confound and confront audiences all over America and the world with searing live shows and masterful new records.
Coming to prominence as one of Sub/Pop’s first signings the DWARVES reputation for live madness earned the fear and loathing of grunge era crowds and the shock and awe of their peers. Between 1988-92 they performed live with many of the most popular bands of the era including Nirvana, Green Day and the Offspring to name just a few. The Dwarves will headline the WavePOP Showcase at The Shredder on Thursday, March 20th.

Justin Ringle is a native of Lewiston, Idaho. He attended the University of Idaho in Moscow in the early 2000s. During that time, he was part of a thriving underground rock scene centered around UofI college radio station KUOI 89.3 FM playing in formative bands Two Play Color, Echo Ave and others. Soon after moving to Portland, Ringle took his music in a new, more folk-driven, direction and brought Horse Feathers to life. In 2006, debut LP Words Are Dead was released by Lucky Madison Records. The following year, he signed with Kill Rock Stars. By early 2008 they released House with No Home, which became one of the highest-selling debuts in Kill Rock Stars’ history. Horse Feathers have released a couple more records with KRS since and now are working on a fifth album. With the band’s deep ties to Idaho, it’s great to finally get them here for Treefort Music Fest this year.

As 2013 came to an end, Sallie Ford and her longtime band The Sound Outside announced the end of their run working together, a relationship that started back in 2007 before Sallie and her music jumped from obscurity to touring with The Avett Brothers and regular headlining tours through Europe and Stateside that they’ve been sustaining the last several years. The boys of The Sound Outside have moved on, but Sallie wasted little time putting together a new all-girl band that now features Cristina Cano (Siren & the Sea & Albatross), Amanda Spring (Point Juncture, WA & more), Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce, Blue giant, Calico Rose & more). Treefort 2014 will be getting one of the first tastes of this new chapter in the Sallie Ford rock ‘n’ roll journey and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

“Brooklyn quartet Milagres caught our ear with their 2011 debut Glowing Mouth, a funked-up psych-pop set prone to flights of poetic fancy grounded due to singer Kyle Wilson’s bedridden state at the time. But it is motion that informs their forthcoming album Violent Light, due via Kill Rock Stars on February 25, 2014 (February 24 via Memphis Industries abroad). The new LP takes its title and themes from Wilson’s sojourns to New Mexico in order to visit with his grandfather, a scientist who worked on both the Manhattan Project and the hydrogen bomb. Their discussions about nuclear physics were set to the spiritual and elemental backdrop of the American Southwest.” — SPIN

“For all of their affinity for murky, sludgy sounds, Pontiak roars away with remarkable precision, pulling off that men-as-machine ethos quite convincingly. Maybe it’s a sibling thing?” – San Francisco Bay Guardian /// Pontiak is three brothers that grew up and live on farms in Virginia. Their lifelong closeness yields uncommon musical understanding, creative collaboration and personal camaraderie. Their singular combination of impressive work ethic and boundless creativity pays off on their new album INNOCENCE. From the explosive title track to the mellow groove of “Wildfires,” these 11 songs are some of the most absorbing and melodic material the band has produced, without ever losing their signature heft. INNOCENCE will be released Jan 28, 2014 on Thrill Jockey Records.

Berkeley, California based producer Thriftworks offers his own uniquely original take on forward thinking electronic music, weaving eclectic samples and explosive modern bass that continually pushes the envelope while taking the art of beat-crafting to new heights. Garnering much praise from fans and critics alike with his steady stream of new material, Thriftworks is quickly becoming known as one of the finest up and coming experimental producers with his outside the box sound and unclassifiable style. Thriftworks’ use of deep low-end and wall to wall synths seem to channel something ancient and mysterious, offering up an intoxicating musical high with an invigorating breath of fresh air. These sounds activate the senses, enrapture the mind, move the body and leave audiences begging for more.

Although Berlin based producer Robot Koch has an international reputation as being “One of Europe`s finest producers of the beat generation“ (Low End Theory), he is much more than just a beatmaker… “(Post)-Dubstep infused Electronic HipHop“ is far too constrained a label to understand what this producer is all about. Robot Koch is also the mastermind behind the critically acclaimed band Jahcoozi (BPitch Control), Robot Robinson with John Robinson and works as a producer and composer for both indie and major artists worldwide.

Seducing the world via his own brand of dream-soaked pop and lushed out R&B, Antonio Cuna, aka Sweater Beats, is a force to be reckoned with. Since the release of his single “MLLN DLLR” on Bondax’s Justus Recordings in 2012, Cuna has gathered support from Diplo, Annie Mac, Para One and more with his unique tracks and bootlegs. His skillful synth work and vocal manipulations translate bedroom music to the club, and his DJ sets are as diverse as they are emotional. Sweater Beats’ debut EP for Symbols (“That Feel”) sees Antonio ditching samples in favor of original vocalists, and the finished product is a glimpse of what R&B might sound like in the year 2020.

Perfect Pussy are one of the boldest and most intriguing projects to surface in recent years, garnering widespread critical acclaim following the release of a four song EP, titled I have lost all desire for feeling, in early 2013. Veiled beneath layers of exquisitely abrasive noise, frontwoman Meredith Graves’ lyrics are disarming, brutally honest and poetic, possessing a feverish intensity that can only be matched by Graves’ electric stage presence. Hailing from Syracuse, New York, the band is comprised of members from the local punk and hardcore community. Perfect Pussy recently signed with Captured Tracks, who will be releasing their debut LP Say Yes To Love on March 18th, just 5 days before they land in Boise for Treefort 2014.

The story of TEENS has been fairly well entwined with the story of Treefort. The first Treefort Music Fest in 2012 was borne out of a period of the Boise music scene that brought a fresh wave of young artists out of the woodwork and on to the national spotlight to varying degrees, the most notable being Youth Lagoon, but also included the likes of Atomic Mama, Shades, Owlright, Wolvserpent, and others. The last two years, TEENS’ Treefort sets at The Red Room have been legendarily wild, and according to legend, the venue narrowly escaped crumbling down upon their rocknroll steam train. Word is is that TEENS will play their final show for the foreseeable future at Treefort 2014. Brace yourselves.

Disco Doom is the Zurich based band of Anita Rufer, Gabriele De Mario and Flo Goette. It’s mainly two guitars, vocals and a bass playing with different drummers and with sometimes some keyboard. In the last years Disco Doom toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States opening for Built to Spill or touring on their own in the US and in Europe. Their new album Numerals will be released February 11th on Exploding in Sound Records in the US and February 7th on Defer Records in Switzerland/Europe, followed by a full US tour and appearances at SXSW, Treefort and other Stateside festivals. This new Disco Doom record is incredible and we feel very lucky to be hosting them at Treefort 2014 fresh off of its release.
DUCK. LITTLE BROTHER, DUCK!
((( portland, oregon )))
Duck. Little Brother, Duck! take the upside down genre of math rock and turn it on its head once again. The band made their entrance into the Portland scene with fifteen sprawling tracks in the spring of 2010. Survival Is Not A Workout is a smartly-crafted full-length that travels a rough terrain with tracks like ‘L. Ron Hubbard (We Did One Of These At The Mall)’ and ‘Steve Jobs (All Is Fun Until Someone Gets Stabbed)’. The band followed this release up with their first cross-continental tour (with Girlfriends) that summer where they left audiences, at the very most, with mouths agape, and at the very least, confused.
Truly wish we could talk about each and every one of these artists in great detail, as we are excited about each and every one of them. We’ll let their music do the talking though. Click on band names below and start diving into their worlds, get to know them and we will get you a schedule soon to start making your tough decisions. Happy hunting!
